SURGE 2
The Simple Underwater Generation of Renewable Energy 2 (SURGE 2) project was a demonstration by AW-Energy (AW) of their Oscillating Wave Energy Converters (OSWEC) platform named the WaveRoller. SURGE 2 is a continuation of the original SURGE project with new concept changes to the WaveRoller design such as reducing the design from three modular OSWEC's to a single unit capable of 350 kW of power.
Development of the project began in 2015 with the completion of AW's private 1.5 MW power take off (PTO) testing facility in Järvenpää, Finland. Construction and deployment of the SURGE 2 was completed in 2019. Like its predecessor it was deployed off the coast of the beach of Almagreira Peniche in Portugal and was tied to the grid via an onshore substation originally built for SURGE which underwent upgrades to meet the demands of the new deployment. The device was retrieved after two years at sea in 2021.
