SURGE
The Simple Underwater Generation of Renewable Energy (SURGE) project was a demonstration by AW-Energy (AW) of three Oscillating Wave Energy Converters (OSWEC) built into a single platform. Early preparational work and fabrication began as early as 2009 but the actual deployment of the device off the coast of the beach of Almagreira Peniche in Portugal occurred in 2012. Each device was rated for 100 kW of power for a combined total of 300 kW which was tied to the grid via a substation built for this deployment. Sensor data obtained by the device was used to adapt its power take off (PTO) system to changing sea states for optimal performance and was also made available to AW remotely in real time. The device was deployed a second time in 2013 where it experienced wave swells of up to eight meters in height without damage. By the end of both deployments the results were encouraging enough for the development of a second project SURGE 2.
