National Marine Comprehensive Test Site Zhoushan
The National Marine Comprehensive Test Site Zhoushan (here forward referred to as Zhoushan) is part of a larger test network off the coast of China referred to collectively as the National Marine Test Site. The four marine facilities are operated by the National Ocean Technology Center (NOTC) and stretch most of the length of China's coastline. The layout of the facilities is intended to service the Northern and Southern Coastlines as well as provide unique testing sites for shallow and deep water. While the NOTC claims marine activities in the areas began as early as 2009, the formal versions known today were officially compiled in May of 2018 by the NMTC and approved by the the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Zhoushan is located between Putuoshan Island and Huladao Island in Zhoushan City, Zhejian Province. The water depth for the test site ranges from 20 m to 80 m. The area experiences a tidal range of up to 4.75 m and current speeds of up to 2 m/s. The test area is divided into the ocean energy power generation device test area and the ocean instrument and equipment test area according to its function. The ocean energy power generation device test area has planned and designed demonstration berths, test berths, power test systems, environmental monitoring systems, island-based shore stations and other construction contents. Through the construction of demonstration projects supported by special funds for marine renewable energy, pile foundation platforms, environmental monitoring systems and island-based shore stations have been built in the sea area and put into operation. The marine instrument and equipment test area is mainly aimed at the offshore test needs of marine observation and monitoring instruments and equipment such as hydrology, meteorology, ecology, and geology, and has planned test platforms, background field monitoring systems and other supporting facilities.
- Tidal
- Open Ocean: Main body of ocean, not enclosed or partially enclosed by land
- Coastal: Open water near the coast, spanning between land and shelf boundary
- Enclosed Bay: water that is partially surrounded by land, with a mouth open to larger water
- Constricted Channel: A channel where water flows quickly due to narrowing by the land
- River: Water flowing from land towards a larger body of water
