Race Rocks Ecological Preserve 2nd Deployment
The second deployment in October 2008 of the Clean Current Turbine (See First Deployment) at Race Rocks featured improvements learned via the first deployment such an improved enclosed bearing system. Such improvements enabled the device to operate for three years onsite until its recovery in March 2011 where significant biofouling was observable on the device. While the system demonstrated its capability to operate for an extended time, its power production was unable to meet Race Rocks demands. As a result Race Rocks invested more into its battery and Solar systems as opposed to further tidal efforts. The device was however marked for its historical precedent as the first tidal turbine operating in Canada. Upon recovery, the device was sent to the Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa for display.
