Kaneohe Bay OPT Wave Project
Wave energy developer Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) deployed a wave power generation unit near Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii. OPT launched the unit under the company’s program with the U.S. Navy for installation of PowerBuoys off the U.S. Marine base at Kaneohe Bay. The deployed device was intended to be connected to the Oahu power grid, but this never materialized. OPT announced that the device was installed on 12 November 2008, one mile off the coast of Oahu, in 100 feet of water. The device was modular in design, and generated power by moving up and down on a central spar as waves passed by.
