Sustainable Marine Energy and Schottel Hydro PLAT-I
The PLAT-I 6.40 is a innovative floating tidal energy system. It was built after years of research and development and on the lessons learned and experience gained from Sustainable Marine’s previous successful deployments in Scotland and Nova Scotia. It was designed specifically for the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) and it produces 50% more power than its predecessor, PLAT-I 4.63. PLAT-I 6.40 pivots on a turret connected to a catenary mooring spread and passively aligns with the natural flow of the tides. The trimaran design of the platform has been designed to provide low resistance and enhanced stability, as well as full accessibility to the turbines. The platform also allows for year round access to the power conditioning cabinets, the medium voltage components as well as all auxiliary systems. The structure, is a modular design that allows for worldwide shipping and ease of assembly at site. PLAT-I 6.40 is equipped with six SIT 250 instream turbines rated at 70 kW for a total of 420 kW. Each turbine consist of a mechanical drivetrain as well as a composite rotor. The platform is equipped with turbines that lift up allowing for easy inspection and maintenance. It has been designed with a safety feature that allows the turbines to kick-up to reduce loading on the platform and mooring spread in extreme conditions. The same kick-up system allows trapped debris to be cleared and protects the turbines from ice impact. Electrical power produced by individual turbines are conditioned in the mid-section of the centre hull. An onboard transformer steps up the voltage before it is exported off the platform via a subsea cable to the shore station. This cable runs through the centre of the turret via a slip ring system that allows electrical and fibre optic cables to pass through the platform. This prevents any twisting of the cable as the platform turns with each change of the tide.
