ATIR

ATIR is a floating tidal energy device made by Magallanes Renovables. The device has three main parts: the (1) powertrain submerged within the water column with 2 attached turbines that capture energy from the tides, (2) a hollow mast the connects and enables full access of the powertrain from the (3) main body shaped like a ship floating on the surface which houses electrical and computing systems, allowing for stable energy transmission onto the grid.

Initially built as a 1:30 scale design for lab prototyping, a 1:10 unit was built and tested in 2014 with the goal of targeting the devices floatability, simplicity, sturdiness, minimal moving parts, facilitation of maintenance. Constructed in Vigo Spain, the unit underwent preliminary validation before being transferred to the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) Shapinsay Sound test site for open sea testing.

In 2017 a full scale ATIR was constructed in Vigo Spain with a hull length of 45 m, width of 15 m and a combined turbine capacity of 1.5 Mw. The goal of this device was to validate the commercial scale design with electrical operation performance, demonstrate long term operation in real sea states, push forward the business and marketing strategies, and to further advance existing supply chains. For this testing, the device was deployed to the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) Fall of Warness test site in February of 2019 for long term testing at berth 1. The device was later connected in March of 2019 to the grid via the test sites existing facilities and left for long term monitoring of its performance and periodic maintenance.
