InSPIRE Research Sites

The InSPIRE Research team has studied compatibility and mutual benefits of solar development with agriculture and native landscapes at active field research sites since 2015. This page highlights 22 active InSPIRE Research sites across the country. The InSPIRE Research team is led within the Strategic Energy Analysis Center at NREL and the Environmental Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory and builds upon expertise throughout the labs along with external research partner organizations. Research partners are unique to each site, composed of organizations such as site owners, solar energy developers, non-profits, and academic institutions.

Research is conducted using consistent and standard approaches across sites to collect data on a wide variety of energy, agricultural, and environmental metrics. These metrics can include PV panel temperatures and energy generation, plant or crop responses, soil moisture and hydrology, microclimate, insect populations, and more! The data is centrally catalogued by NREL and the results are open source to the public to increase awareness of agrivoltaic performance and tradeoffs across the country.

Check out the list of InSPIRE research Publications or go to the Data Portal to find specific data sets and publications beyond the InSPIRE project.
