Bulk Transmission Development in Kansas
The Kansas electric grid is part of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s (NERC) Eastern Interconnection. In Kansas, the Southwest Power Pool, RE (SPP) is the regional entity, under NERC, charged with developing reliability standards and monitoring compliance for all owners, operators and users of the bulk electric system. SPP also acts the primary balancing authority in Kansas managing and operating the transmission system.
In Kansas, there are investor-owned, independent, and cooperative transmission providers, including:
- Kansas Electric Power Cooperative that provides transmission services throughout the state;
- Mid-Kansas Electric Company which serves central Kansas;
- Midwest Energy which provides transmission services throughout the state;
- Sunflower Electric Power Corporation which is one of the largest cooperatives in the state and serves western Kansas;
- Kansas City Power & Light Company that provides transmission services to eastern and central Kansas; and
- Westar Energy which provides transmission services in eastern Kansas.
