Guyana Power and Light is working hard to improve the electrification of their country, and is using semi-smart STS meters from UtiliFlex to reduce their non-technical losses. Historically, non-technical losses have been > 30%. GP&L is installing 'Pay-As-You-Go' prepaid meters with integral disconnects to reduce these losses. These meters communicate via tokens purchased by the consumer from the utility that are entered into an in-home display and keypad. These tokens may be purchased from the utility offices, or from vendors/resellers such as Bill Express locations as well as small local 'Mom and Pop' stores. These tokens are crytographically keyed to the meters serial number. They may also be purchased using scratch cards and cell phones, or even via an IVR system. GP&L is exploring the use of hybrid STS and AMI meters such as the Hexing meters with both STS and Zigbee communications. Their meters are often installed in tamper proof boxes above the power lines in order to deter theft and tampering. In a recent [1]IADB funded rural electrification project, [2] UtiliFlex recently provided a turn key system of meters, enclosures, software and servers for [3] Guyana Power and Light.
