Guyana-Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Sustainable Energy Roadmap and Strategy
Background
“The Twentieth Inter-sessional Meeting of the CARICOM Conference of Heads of Government in March 2009, mandated that a Regional Sustainable Energy Roadmap and Strategy (C-SERMS) be developed under the Energy Programme to form the basis for a more strategic approach to sustainable energy development in the Region. This will inter-alia define a strategic and targeted approach to increasing the contribution of renewable energy, energy efficiency and bio-energy in the energy mix. It will also provide the basis for firm commitments by Government of the region, and development partners in achieving this objective.”2
Overview
C-SERMS Phase 1 will be a key planning mechanism and communication tool to link the priorities and renewable energy policy goals of CARICOM Member States. The final document will map on-going efforts in sustainable development, sustainable energy initiatives/policies, financial and institutional capacity, and electricity generation/transmission/distribution systems in CARICOM Member States. A combination of resource, policy, and socioeconomic assessments will allow the Worldwatch Institute to work with in-country partners to propose short, medium, and long-term targets for renewable energy and energy efficiency within the region, as well as conduct baseline work for more a more comprehensive regional Sustainable Energy Roadmap.
