Conference Paper: Geothermal Resource Exploration And Definition Projects

The Geothermal Resource Exploration and Definition (GRED) projects are cooperative Department of Energy (DOE)/industry projects to find, evaluate, and define additional geothermal resources throughout the western United States. The ultimate goal is to increase electrical power generation from geothermal resources in the United States and facilitate reductions in the cost of geothermal energy through applications of new technology. DOE initiated GRED in April 2000 with a solicitation for industry participation, and this solicitation resulted in seven successful awards in four different states. These seven GRED I projects are now completed or in the final wrap-up stages. A second solicitation (GRED II) was issued in April 2002, resulting in seven more successful awards. Projects consist of up to three phases, including (1) exploration and site selection, (2) drilling of a test well, and (3) testing and assessment. The seven GRED I projects are located at Rye Patch, NV, Blue Mountain, NV, Cove Fort/Sulphurdale, UT, Fourmile Hill, CA, Steamboat Springs, NV, Steamboat Hills (U-Boat), NV, and Lightning Dock, NM. The seven GRED II projects are located at Raft River, ID, Blue Mountain, NV, Truckhaven, CA, Animas Valley, NM, Lake City, CA, Glass Mountain, CA, and San Francisco Volcanic Field, AZ. By providing cost-shared funding of exploration and initial drilling, DOE is mitigating the risk of initial project development in order to encourage the accessing of new geothermal resources. Several of the projects have obtained successful or encouraging results, and numerous projects have progressed through phase II drilling activities into final assessment. In addition, a solicitation for a third round of projects (GRED III) was initiated in March 2004.
