Climate Registry Information System
Overview
The Climate Registry Information System (CRIS) is the official online greenhouse gas calculation, reporting, and verifcation tool for The Climate Registry, a North American registry through which members voluntarily report GHG emissions publicly. Emissions in CRIS are calculated using The Climate Registry's General Reporting Protocol.[1] The calculator provides reporting functionality for scope 1 (including stationary combustion, mobile combustion, physical and chemical process emissions, and fugitive sources) and scope 2 (including purchased electricity, steam, heating, or cooling) emissions. Scope 3 emissions may be reported optionally, but calculation methodologies for these emissions are not directly incorporated into the tool. The CRIS calculator may be used to calculate a baseline GHG emissions inventory and report annually thereafter.
Inputs and Outputs
Inputs include: Entity and facility information, such as location and category; information about emissions sources (e.g., sector, nameplate capacity, and operating status); and type, end use, and quantity of fuel consumed in emissions sources during the reporting year. Emissions may be reported by source using the CRIS built-in calculator, or by facility (users must separately calculate and enter total GHGs emitted by scope and gas for each facility). Emissions factors and calculation methodologies may be customized by the user, or a default factors built into the calculator may be used.
Outputs include: Total annual emissions (both for each gas as well as total metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent) for each source.
Highlights
CRIS may be used not only to calculate and report, but also to verify GHG emissions inventory. Through The Climate Registry, emissions reports are verified by independent, third-party verifiers within CRIS. The system includes workflow functionality and quality assurance checks that flag potential errors.
