Transitioning to Geothermal

As the energy sector shifts toward renewable resources, workers in oil and gas, hvac, pipefitting, and more have valuable opportunities to apply their skills in geothermal energy. Geothermal relies on many overlapping competencies, making this transition not only feasible but highly promising.

A great example of the promise of transitioning from traditional energy to geothermal is Sage Geosystems, whose team leveraged their combined 200 years of experience in Oil and Gas to secure a deal to provide over 150 megawatts of geothermal energy to Meta's data centers.

Transferable Skills

Workers in oil and gas and parallel industries bring critical expertise that can translate directly to geothermal energy:

  • Engineering and Drilling: Skills in well drilling, pipefitting, and reservoir management are directly applicable to geothermal projects, which also involve drilling deep into the Earth.
  • Health and Safety: Experience with safety protocols and regulations in hazardous environments remains relevant and critical in geothermal operations.
  • Project Management: Overseeing large-scale, interdisciplinary energy projects is a shared need across sectors.
  • HVAC and Construction: Designing and installing systems that can efficiently transfer heat into indoor spaces is a crucial skill for thermal energy networks, heat pumps, and direct use applications.
  • Electricians: Installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in homes and power plants is key to the operation of geothermal for home, community, and district geothermal.

Building a Major

Now that you have the list of core courses for designing your geothermal education, you'll need to work closely with school faculty to build your course list into a major. Here’s a step-by-step guide to working with college staff to design your major:

Step 1: Research and Prepare Initial Plan

  • Understand School Policies: Familiarize yourself with your college’s guidelines for designing a major. These can often be found on the school’s website or by contacting the registrar.
  • Define your Goals: Reflect on your interests, strengths, and career aspirations. Identify why a custom major is the best fit for your goals.
  • Draft an Outline: Sketch out an initial idea for your major, including potential courses such as those listed in the core geothermal courses section, disciplines to combine, and any relevant skills you want to develop.

Step 2: Get in Touch with Key Contacts

  • Academic Advisors: Start with your academic advisor. They can provide guidance on policies and connect you with other resources for building your major.
  • Faculty Mentors: Reach out to professors in the fields you want to include in your major, including geology/geosciences, engineering, mathematics, and economics. Their expertise can help shape your program.
  • Program Coordinators: Some colleges have designated staff for interdisciplinary or custom majors who can assist with planning and approval processes.

Step 3: Collaborate with Staff and Refine Plans for your Major

  • Schedule Meetings: Arrange meetings with advisors and faculty to discuss your ideas. Come prepared with questions and your preliminary outline.
  • Be Open to Incorporating Feedback: Staff may suggest adjustments or recommend courses that align better with your goals. Use their input to refine your plan.
  • Ensure Feasibility: Confirm that the courses you want to include are regularly offered and that prerequisites can be met within your timeline.

Step 4: Develop a Proposal

  • Write a Formal Plan: Include a title for your major, a description of its purpose, a list of required courses, and how it aligns with your career or educational goals.
  • Include Learning Outcomes: Clearly define what skills and knowledge you expect to gain from your program.
  • Get your Plan Approved: Submit your proposal to the relevant committee or department for review. If you're not sure who to submit your proposal to for approval, work with your academic advisor or program coordinator to identify the correct channels for your proposal.

Step 5: Check in on Goals and Progress

  • Regular Check-ins: Keep in touch with your advisor to ensure your plan remains on track and to address any challenges that arise.
  • Keep Up with Registrations and Progress: Stay organized and proactive about course registration and meeting the requirements for your major.
