Energy Sector Management Assistance Program of the World Bank (ESMAP)

The Energy Sector Management Assistance Program is administered by the World Bank, an organization based in Washington, DC.

Overview

Established in 1983, the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) is a global, multidonor technical assistance trust fund administered by the World Bank and cosponsored by 12 official bilateral donors. ESMAP assists its clients – low- and middle-income countries – to increase know-how and institutional capacity in order to achieve environmentally sustainable energy solutions for poverty reduction and economic growth.

Since 2007 ESMAP has supported low carbon development planning in 18 countries, including economy-wide low carbon growth studies in Brazil, India, Mexico, Poland and Vietnam and energy sector studies in Nigeria and South Africa. These activities have led to the development of two economy-wide modeling tools and a city energy efficiency benchmarking tool, all of which are now freely available to the global community and are being deployed in ongoing studies. Training and capacity building is provided in conjunction with the World Bank Institute, with the result that several countries have now adopted these tools for ongoing analysis.
