TDOT is a multimodal agency with responsibilities in aviation, public transit, waterways, railroads and cycling and walking. TDOT is also responsible for the construction and maintenance of the state's highway system, as well as enforcing regulations pertaining to the use of those roadways. TDOT issues permits for certain activities involving transportation within the state. TDOT has four statewide region facilities in Jackson, Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Nashville where it is headquartered.
