Exploration Basis

This study was conducted to create a model of the thermal structure of Kilauea for the purposes of analyzing geothermal potential as part of the coordinated exploration program for geothermal sources on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Notes

A two week micro-seismic study in the Puna district was conducted using an array of seven geophones. Seismic events were recorded from 1-5 km deep. The seismic data was interpreted as the active part of the dike complex being limited to 5 km depth.
