Report: Integrated Geoscience Investigation and Geothermal Exploration at Chena Hot Springs, Alaska

Abstract

This document represents the final report for Phase I of the Chena Hot Springs GRED IIIproject. Phase I has involved a number of comprehensive geological, geochemical, hydrological, and geophysical surveys conducted over a period of 18 months.Additionally, an extensive temperature-gradient hole drilling and testing program duringthe same period resulted in numerous holes with depths up to 1020 feet. This work haspartially delineated the shallow boundaries of the geothermal resource, and has provideda target location and depth for the drilling of a deep slimhole planned for Phase II.The activities occurring as part of this project have taken place simultaneous to theinstallation and startup of a 400 kW binary power plant at Chena Hot Springs. Thepower plant consists of two 200kW units installed between July and December, 2006.Both units were built by United Technologies Corporation, and operate off 163 oF waterproduced from the shallow geothermal system. The proposed Phase II holes are plannedto be drilled during 2007 in the hope of discovering hotter waters that will allow anexpansion of the geothermal power output, and provide additional options in managingthe overall resource production/injection strategy. As a whole, geothermal systems in Interior Alaska have been poorly characterized andtheir resource potential largely overlooked. It is hoped that the ongoing exploration andpower generation projects at Chena will encourage other moderate temperature sites toconsider development of their resources for both direct use and power generation.
