Project Description Goals of the project are to identify all materials, systems, or processes that could function as bridging materials under EGS conditions, to confirm in the candidate materials’ sealing abilities and degradation kinetics under EGS conditions, to quantify performance vs. temperature, pressure, fracture width, etc. to produce a field application design protocol, and to confirm performance via field demonstration trials.

Targets / Milestones - Identify materials that could produce temporary seals under EGS conditions,

- Quantify bridging performance and degradation using laboratory screening tests,
- Confirm performance of materials/systems passing initial screening in long term field simulation testing using equipment specifically designed and built for this project,
- Develop quantitative field application design tool based on laboratory data,
- Confirm performance of successful materials in EGS field applications.

The project is divided by the following:

- CSI will perform initial screening, develop design correlations, and perform long-term studies of sealing effectiveness and degradation kinetics.
- EGI will design lab-scale dynamic test apparatus as well as perform testing of bridging material deposition, sealing effectiveness, and degradation under dynamic conditions.
- AltaRock will test viable candidates in field applications.

Impacts The application of these bridging materials in EGS wells include: curing lost circulation while drilling, increase drilling efficiency as well as flow diversion applied during hydraulic stimulation; and increase distribution of open fractures between injection and production wells.
