AbstractDuring fusion of volcanic glasses under vacuum in a gas-analysis system, sublimates condense out on the walls of the silica sample tube. These sublimates were analyzed using X.R.D. and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis coupled to a S.E.M. Successive mineral zones characterized by different compounds, condense out in the following order from high to low temperatures (1) cristobalite; (2) villiaumite; and (3) halite and sylvite. In addition there is strong evidence for the presence of digenite between zones 1 and 2 and sphalerite interspersed with the alkali halides. These zones are very similar to recently described natural examples and those collected in sample tubes from high-temperature fumaroles under reducing conditions. Because the laboratory examples can be linked to melt and gas compositions under controlled thermal conditions, they may prove useful in relating natural sublimate types to the coexisting phases, and the prevailing conditions during volcanic emission.
