Possible Magmatic Input to the Dixie Valley Geothermal Field, and Implications for District-Scale Resource Exploration, Inferred from Magnetotelluric (MT) Resistivity Surveying

Magnetotelluric (MT) profiling in northwestern Nevadais used to test hypotheses on the main sources of heat andhydrothermal fluid for the Dixie Valley-Central NevadaSeismic Belt area. The transect reveals families of resistivitystructures commonly dominated by steeply-dipping features,some of which may be of key geothermal significance. Mostnotably, 2-D inversion of these data has resolved a high-angle,conductive fault zone-like structure extending from the baseof Dixie Valley to a broad, deep crustal conductor beneaththe Stillwater-Humboldt Range area. The deep conductor iscoincident with the Buena Vista anomalousseismic area, and such conductors are generallycorrelated with magmatic underplatingand fluid exsolution. This deeply extending,steep fault zone may be the means fordeep transport of fluids upward to providehigh temperatures at the Dixie Valleyfield, including a component of magmaticfluids consistent with recent He isotopestudies and the existence of hot springsmanifestations in the center of the valley.Decomposed impedance axis analysis suggeststhe overall trend of this break is nearlyN-S. However, other important conductivitystructures imaged in the transect includepossible large-scale sedimentary folds inthe Phanerozoic continental shelf section,and overthrusting near the margin with theSierra Nevada plutonic province. This experiencehighlights the need to bring externalconstraints when interpreting resistivity inthe Great Basin.
