PNNL’s Operational Systems Engineering Group provides solutions to the nation’s energy challenges with the advancement of scientific theory and principles through integrated design and multidisciplinary engineering. This includes improving efficiency and mitigating the risks and impacts of renewable energy systems on the natural environment. Capabilities include: Site characterization: velocity and turbulence measurement with boat and bottom deployment of acoustic Dooppler current profiler (ADCP); Wave characterization with bottom deployed ADCP; Water quality measurement and monitoring; Bathymetric surveys; Simulation, Simulation or river and estuarine environments (depth, velocity, water quality, etc.) using 1D, 2D and 3D codes: MASS1 - 1D cross-section averaged; MASS2 - 2D plan view; Delft3D - 3D hydrostatic free surface; Star-CCM, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations: Turbo machinery simulation for power generation (e.g. Kaplan and Francis turbines); Modeling biota interaction with turbines using particle simulations; Simulate complex 3D flows with free surface in natural settings (e.g. rivers; estuaries; hydroelectric dam forebays and tailraces); Simulate complex 3D flows in and around engineered structures (e.g. spillways; turbine intakes and draft tubes; marine turbines; and fish guidance structures); Fluid Structure Interaction (flow induces deflections and vibrations), Structural Mechanics and Dynamics Simulations: Complex structural dynamics models of engineered systems exposed to external cyclic loading (e.g. seismic; transport; operational shock and vibration; etc.); Explicit dynamics simulation of impact events; Stress analysis of power generation system components.
