Groundwater Flow And Heat Flow In An Area Of Mineral Springs
Abstract As part of the project Geologic Profonde d
As part of the project Geologic Profonde de la France, two boreholes have been drilled in the active hydrothermal area of Chassole, an area of metamorphic Variscan basement characterized by the occurrence of sodium-bicarbonate waters that have undergone high temperatures during their underground cycle. The underground water flow system, as revealed from various hydraulic and chemical observations, appears very complex: it is characterized by the simultaneous presence of meteoric water flowing downwards and mineralized water of deep origin flowing upwards. Geothermal measurements performed in the borehole are presented in detail and a semi-quantitative interpretation is given. A vertical profile of heat flow down to 1400 m depth indicates important variations, which are interpreted as the result of upward vertical movement of water. The quantitative interpretation of the data is based on simple models of steady state and transient temperature disturbances associated with water flow.
