Systematic exploration of geothermal resources began after compilation of an inventory of surface manifestations by the Hot Spring Committee in 1968. Barring one or two locations, the geothermal resources are of low and intermediate temperatures. Based on the recommendation of the Hot Spring Committee, detailed studies were conducted initially in the Puga Valley, Parbati Valley and West Coast. UNDP assistance was provided for exploration in the Parbati Valley and West Coast. Exploration has since been extended to a few more areas. The results obtained so far have indicated the possibility of power generation at Puga by conventional methods, and by binary cycle technology in the Parbati Valley. In the meantime, efforts have been made to use low temperature resources in space-heating, cold storage, bathing and tourism.
