An electrical resistivity survey was conducted in the Puna and Kau districts. The study sought out to find locations that might be favorable for geothermal utilization. Time-domain electromagnetic techniques were used as well as dipole mapping techniques. Thirteen bipole sources were used for mapping the Puna and Kau areas. High resistivities were interpreted as the presents of dense cool dike complexes unlikely to be useful for geothermal development. Low resistivities were found in the lower east rift zone and interpreted as rock containing geothermal fluids with temperatures greater than 180°C and extending down to about 2 km below sea level.
