Balboa Pacific Corporation developed a Thermal Conversion Pyrolytic Gasification System called the Bal-Pac - a continuous feed waste treatment technology. The process is the destructive distillation of toxic or non-toxic organic material, either solid or liquid substances, reducing the feedstock to a sterile ash and hot exhaust gases. Pyrolytic Gasification differs dramatically from incinerators or fluidized bed gasifiers because pyrolytic gasification operates in an oxygen starved environment (pyrolysis). Rather than burning waste, the Pyrolytic Gasification technology thermally degrades organic materials at temperatures ranging from 800º F to 1200º F and then, through a closed conduit, the process gases are introduced to the Thermal Oxidizer with temperatures up to 2250º F. The ash (char) by-product produced is primarily carbon and stabilized (oxidized) metals. Depending on what waste materials are being used as feedstock, the char by-product can be: carbon black (a precious traded commodity) from the conversion of used tires, or biochar (a wonderful soil additive that will someday replace nitrogen based, environmentally harmful fertilizers) from the conversion of biomasses including wood, agricultural waste, landscape waste, algae waste, etc. The hot gasses produced may be used for a variety of applications including co-generation. Several of the nation's leading environmental engineering companies such as Dames & Moore, Sandia Labs and Pacific Environmental Services have tested the process emissions from the decomposition of a wide range of waste material processed by the Bal-Pac Thermal Conversion Systems, with documented results declaring that the Bal-Pac System exceeds all standards set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Air Quality Management District (AQMD).
