Navy’s Geothermal Program Office: Overview of Recovery Act (ARRA) Funded Exploration in CA and NV and other Exploration Projects
AbstractThe Navy's Geothermal Program Office (GPO) manages, explores for and supports the development of geothermal resources on Department of Defense (DoD) -managed lands. We are currently conducting exploration in 13 sites or regions on 6 military installations in Nevada and California. We also have tentative plans to expand our activities late this year or early next year into Utah as well as Guam and the Republic of Djibouti, northeast Africa. A portion of this work is being supported by $13.1M in Recovery Act (ARRA) funds received from the Navy, Army and Marines. ARRA funds plus our budget are supporting work ranging from the acquisition and interpretation of geophysical and remote sensing data, to field work, to shallow and deep drilling campaigns. Temperature gradient drilling and deeper drilling was performed in the last 2 years at the Marine base near Twentynine Palms, CA, on the Navy's NAF El Centro base in Imperial County, CA, and at the Hawthorne Army Depot, NV. GPO is currently drilling on the west flank of the Chocolate Mountains, Imperial County, CA and have plans to complete up to 80 more temperature gradient holes and up to $25M in intermediate to deep, geophysical test holes in Imperial County, Hawthorne and Fallon, NV over the next 2 years. It is our assumption that many more small- to medium-sized (e.g. 5-50 MWe), conventional geothermal systems exist in the western U.S. Most of these may ultimately be classified as 'blind' discoveries because of their limited to poorly understood surface manifestations. GPO employs geothermal occurrence model principles to broadly guide where we initiate our investigations. Our exploration projects employ existing and in some cases, untested techniques to vector our focus. Ultimately we identify and then drill selected targets. SECNAV Mabus outlined very ambitious energy goals for the Navy in late 2009. Half of the shore-based energy requirementsare to be produced from renewable sources by 2020. As the only geothermal exploration outfit in DoD, the GPO plans to continue this accelerated exploration pace on DoD-managed lands world wide and manage the development of these resourcesvia public/private ventures much like our model program at the Coso geothermal field.
