About MIT[edit]

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a research institution and university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. M.I.T.'s mission is to "advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century."[2] M.I.T. opened in 1865 thanks to the efforts of William Barton Rogers, a natural scientist with a vision to create an institution to meet the demands of an ever-changing nation undergoing industrialization. Now, M.I.T. is regarded as a top institution in the world.

M.I.T. is comprised of numerous research centers and laboratories dedicated to advancing technologies. It is made up of five schools and one college, incorporating numerous academic departments, divisions, and degree-granting programs that also cut across departmental boundaries through interdisciplinary studies, centers, laboratories, and programs.

Emerging Technology at MIT[edit]

The Green Airplane[edit]

The M.I.T. Green Airplane is a new design of a domestic airplane that could potentially reduce fuel consumption by 70%. The "double-bubble", named after the cross-section of the fuselage resembling a two joined soap bubbles, has repositioned engines now on the rear of the plane, allowing slower moving air to be taken in. The plane uses thinner wings, and a smaller tail to reduce drag, but the new design creates more stress on the engine. As a result, the green airplane would have to fly 10% slower than conventional Boeing 737s. The design is one of two design models that M.I.T. researchers, working with a $2.1 million research contract, submitted to NASA for the development of new airplane technologies over the next several decades. NASA hopes to have widespread green airplanes in operation by the year 2035.[3]

Building Efficiency partnership with Nstar[edit]

M.I.T. has partnered with state-utility company Nstar to work on an energy efficiency project that will improve the efficiency and decrease energy consumption of buildings. M.I.T. claims that it does not take a lot of new, innovative technology, but rather simple measures aimed at efficiency that can help reduce overall energy consumption of buildings[4]. The partnership and research program are seeking to reduce emissions on the M.I.T. campus by 15% over the next 3 years. To do that, they will employ measures such as replacing lightbulbs with L.E.D. and diode bulbs, improving ventilation and air conditioning, and upgrading lab and electrical equipment. Also important beside these improvements is an attitude shift toward more responsible, energy saving habits. These improvements will cost the two a total of $13 million, with added tools and equipment being lent to the program by the Massachusetts Electric and Gas utility.
