Exploration Basis
Magnetic surveys were conducted to gain a better understanding of the geology and structure of Neal Hot Springs and the surrounding areas. These studies were conducted by students and faculty in geophysics field camps from the Colorado School of Mines, Boise State University, and Imperial College London.
In the 2011 field camp three main profiles were conducted and various short profiles. The magnetometer was set to a sampling rate of 1 Hz and had a built in GPS system to record coordinates as the operator walked. Two cesium vapor magnetometers were used, one recorded the total magnetic field and the other recorded the vertical gradient in the magnetic field. A proton precession magnetometer was installed at a base station to monitor natural fluctuations in the earth magnetic field during the survey. Measurements show a steep gradient in the magnetic field to the north of the hot springs, which is interpreted as a northwest trending fault. An unexpected result of these surveys was a magnetic high in the area of surface alterations, when a magnetic low is normally expected.
