A series of core holes were drilled from 1984 to 1988 as a part of the Continental Scientific Drilling Program (CSDP) to better understand the stratigraphy, structure, hydrothermal alteration, and subsurface architecture of the Valles caldera. Several authors have reported results from these core holes, including Goff et al. (1986, 1987), Gardner et al. (1987, 1989), Hulen & Nielson (1985), Hulen et al. (1988, 1989), Musgrave et al. (1989), Rowley et al. (1987), Shevenell et al. (1988), and Starquist (1988).
Musgrave et al. (1989) included data from several stimulation and flow testing experiments conducted in well VC-2A from April 28 to May 1, 1987. Stimulation experiments targeted an interval at 489.3 m depth with measured temperatures of 210°C. A 2.4-m zone centered at 489 m was perforated with 9 holes on April 29, and stimulation experiments were conducted during the following days. An attempt to stimulate the well by pressurizing the borehole with compressed air on April 30th failed, however attempts to lower the hydrostatic pressure in the well below the flashing point by bailing later that day was successful, resulting in geysering during the final 16 (of 22) bailer runs. When the main valve of the well was opened at 11:00 am the following day, the bore immediately geysered twice and began to erupt continuously.
