This study was conducted to create a model of the thermal structure of Kilauea for the purposes of analyzing geothermal potential as part of the coordinated exploration program for geothermal sources on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Resistivity studies were conducted as part of a larger geophysical assessment of Kilauea's geothermal potential in the 1970's. The resistivity studies included, dipole-bipole mapping, line-loop time-domain inductive sounding, galvanic sounding, and loop-loop frequency-domain sounding. Surveys were conducted across the East Rift Zone and along the flanks of Moana Loa. resistivities as low as two ohm-m were found in the Lower East Rift Zone indicating the possibility of high temperature waters and hydrothermal alterations.
