Country-wide assessment of sector resources such as energy and land use is typically appropriate for pre-feasibility studies or initial technology. Technical assessments of technologies and initiatives provide an analysis of total conversion potential of energy resources for conventional energy uses without taking into account cost or other practical issues such as land use factors. For this reason, it is practical to perform tests across sectors and compare total results.

  • Project design decisions usually require detailed resource studies at the site of potential projects. This is particularly true for projects involving large investments. In the LEDS process, these assessments can be performed by technical teams to provide an initial analysis of technology options.
Renewable energy technical potential
Renewable resource data provides information about the renewable fuel sources and their distribution in time and space. Combined with information on land use characteristics and renewable energy technologies, this information can be used to estimate the potential of converting solar, wind, hydro, biomass, or geothermal energy into useful heat, mechanical energy or electricity at a particular location. Building energy system analysis
Energy efficiency models predict the performance of building energy systems, given information about weather at the building's location, descriptions of the building envelope and HVAC systems, characteristics of on-site power generation equipment, and energy consumption patterns defined by temperature set-points, lighting schedules and room occupancy levels. Building energy system models are complex models that require experience with simulation software and knowledge of building energy systems.

Power system screening and design toolkit
Power system models help with evaluating design options and comparing different technologies for electricity generation projects. These models require some knowledge of renewable energy technologies, information about installation costs and financial assumptions, and weather data. Different models include built-in datasets for some of these input requirements.

Land use analysis
Land use data takes into account the varying carbon capturing capacities of different landscapes. Models in this toolkit can be used to assess mitigation potential based on geographic characteristics while still maintaining productivity within the agricultural and timber industries.

Many developing countries will face significantly increasing demand for transport services in the near future and coming decades—moving freight within the country and internationally, and moving people over roads and by air and water.
