Developed by NETL, ANSYS, and other research partners, the Advanced Process Engineering Co-Simulator (APECS) is an innovative software tool that provides process/equipment co-simulation capabilities for model-based decision support in steady-state process design and optimization.
APECS is built on the process industry CAPE-OPEN (CO) software standard which provides plug-and-play model interoperability and the ANSYS® Engineering Knowledge ManagerTM (EKMTM) which provides integrated access, workflow, and data services. Using APECS, design engineers can integrate, solve, and analyze co-simulations combining CO-compliant equipment simulations with CO-compliant process simulations (e.g., Aspen Plus®, COCO, gPROMS®, HYSYS®, and PRO/II®). APECS provides easy-to-use configuration wizards for use with a wide variety of CO-compliant equipment models including computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, custom engineering models (CEMs), and reduced-order models (ROMs). These models are stored and retrieved via EKM so that APECS users can easily manage co-simulation data/models through the use of a single server-based, enterprise-wide repository.
For post-processing and visualization, APECS provides a CFD viewer to display, within the process simulator, the results of a CFD simulation conducted as a part of a co-simulation. The ParaView scientific visualization tool is available in APECS for viewing 3D CFD results. The process and energy industries can deploy APECS with EKM as a complete engineering solution for fostering rapid technology development, reducing pilot/demonstration-scale facility design time and operating campaigns, and lowering the cost and technical risk in realizing high-efficiency, near-zero emission plants of the future.
