A123Systems is a company located in Watertown, Massachusetts. A123 Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: AONE) develops and manufactures advanced lithium-ion batteries and energy storage systems. Founded in 2001, A123 Systems’ proprietary Nanophosphate® technology is built on novel nanoscale materials initially developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The company is a TS-16949 and ISO9001 certified supplier of advanced lithium ion cells.

In 2008, NREL and A123Systems partnered to support the battery-maker’s effort to develop safe, less expensive, more powerful, and longer lasting batteries for hybrid-electric vehicles. The Laboratory and the battery-maker signed a three-year, Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to examine and develop new techniques to improve thermal management in advanced transportation batteries[2].
