Solar pool heating
Pool Heating is a great use for solar energy. Solar pool heating systems can be very effective and inexpensive. The pool itself is the thermal storage unit and the existing pump that the pool uses will circulate the water through the solar collectors.
Having a good pool cover is one of the best ways to conserve energy and use solar energy to heat the pool. If you don't have a pool cover the solar energy being used will be wasted and you will be using three times as much energy that is necessary.
- Solar Sun Rings- instead of using a full pool cover sun rings are another alternative. The Solar Sun Ring is a passive solar swimming pool heating device made from two sheets of heavyweight U.V. resistant vinyl. The upper clear layer holds insulating air and focuses sunlight on the blue colored lower layer. The blue layer absorbs about 50% of the sunlight and converts it to heat. The balance of the sunlight is allowed to pass through for deep water heating.
Solar collectors need to be placed on a roof or something where the sun's rays can be absorbed. Water from the pool is pumped through the collectors and heats up and then is put back into the pool. If it is extremely hot outside and the pool needs cooled down the water can be pumped through the collectors at night. There are a couple different materials that the collectors can be made of. The most common and least expensive is unglazed (no glass covering). They are generally made of heavy-duty rubber or plastic treated with an ultraviolet (UV) light inhibitor to extend the life of the panels. They work for indoor pools too. Unglazed are the most cost effective solar collector. Glazed collectors are made of copper tubing on an aluminum plate with an iron-tempered glass covering, which increases their cost. These are better than unglazed only if you need use of the pool in very cold temperature. They absorb the heat of the sun better. Solar pool heaters generally last longer even than that of gas and/or heat pump heaters. They cost between three and four thousand dollars including installation. But in the long run it s e worth it. These prices are even fairly competitive with the other kinds of pool heaters.
