The Regulations for Gas Companies, implemented by the Tennessee Regulatory Authority (Authority) outline the standards for metering, distribution and electricity generation for utilities using gas. They follow the same equipment, metering reporting and customer relations standards as the Regulations for Electric Companies. In addition to these requirements these regulations outline purity requirements, pressure limits, piping requirements, odorization requirements, welder requirements, leak reporting requirements/maintenance procedures. The Natural Gas Pipeline Safety Act of 1968 (49 U.S.C. 1671) and the Hazardous Liquid Pipeline Safety Act of 1979 (49 U.S.C. 2001) are the basis of piping regulations for these rules. The current American National Standards Institute, Gas Transmission and Distribution Pumping System (ANSI-B 31.8) are also applicable but the federal laws take priority.
