This data set contains the outlines for active federal oil and gas leases in the Alaska OCS Region through sale 193. They represent a close approximation, but might not be the exact coordinates for those leases. For the official coordinates please refer to the OPD or SOBD for the lease. ALSO NOTE: older leases were done on a NAD 27 grid, and their lease coordinates will not change as long as the lease remains active. Although the NAD 27 leases have been projected to NAD 83 for inclusion in this file, when plotted on the current NAD 83 leasing grid, they will not appear to "line up", because the NAD 83 grids represents a complete re-grid and not a re-projection of the old NAD 27 grid. All current leasing, starting with Sale 144 in September 1996 has been done on the NAD 83 grid.

The MMS is making its existing cadastre data available at http://www.boemre.gov/offshore/mapping/. These data will include digital images of MMS data at the regional, planning area, Official Protraction Diagram (OPD), and Supplemental Official OCS Block Diagram (SOBD)s and digital spatial data in ArcMap shape format at the regional levels.

All active federal offshore leases as of October 01, 2010 are included. Includes leases up through sale 193. Expired or relinquished leases are not included.
These coverages are assumed to be accurate to .5 meters or better.
Coordinates of the block corners were taken from TIMS.
The coordinate values and attributes were pulled from the TIMS database system and converted to ArcInfo files. All-of-block leases are built in longitude/latitude coordinates and cleaned at a resolution of .000001. Partial block leases are built in their OPD native projection zone. True curves are approximated with a series of straight line segments. Arc approximation is performed until one of two criteria is met: (a) the angular difference between adjacent curve approximation points reaches .01 degree, or (b) a maximum of 496 approximation points is used to redefine the true arc. Partial block leases are cleaned to a tolerance of .5 meters, then projected into longitude/latitude coordinates and combined with the coverage for all-of-block leases. The resultant coverage is then cleaned again to a tolerance of 0.000001.
